The rear lobby of the borough’s utility department opens Monday for in-person customer service. The lobby will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays.
The lobby, where borough residents can pay utility bills and ask questions about their accounts, has been closed since March. The side drive-up window has been open for bill paying, even when the lobby was closed.
Customers going inside the building are asked to park behind the building. They should check-in with an attendant that will be stationed at glass doors by the flagpoles.
All borough buildings closed to unescorted members of the public in March at the onset of the COVID-19 health crisis.
Borough staff recommended a limited reopening of this space once Chambersburg entered Gov. Tom Wolf’s yellow mitigation phase of the Coronavirus emergency. That happened Friday.
Borough Manager Jeffrey Stonehill developed ways to ensure social distancing and limited occupancy in the public space inside the building.US CDC guidelines for internal business spaces of essential businesses will be followed, Stonehill said.
While the limited opening won’t be a “business as usual” move, it will provide better customer service to residents, Stonehill said.
Sometimes inside customer service works better, when it is possible.
Chambersburg provides gas, electric, water, sewer and trash pickup services for norough residents.
