Ship U: Making its First NCAA Appearance in Eight Years

On Monday the Shippensburg University softball team earned the Atlantic Region’s No. 6 seed in the 2022 NCAA Division II Softball Championships and will serve as the host of the Atlantic 2 Regional pod that includes No. 2 seed Seton Hill, No. 3 seed Bloomsburg and No. 7 seed Claflin.

What Happened

Shippensburg (31-18) will face rival Bloomsburg (28-18) in the opening round of the NCAA Division II Atlantic Region Tournament. The Raiders are hosting the NCAA Atlantic Regional at Robb Field for the first time since 2014 and it will also be SU’s first NCAA tournament appearance since hosting in 2014.
Thursday marks the fourth meeting of the season between Shippensburg and Bloomsburg. During the regular season, the teams split a doubleheader at Bloomsburg, with the Raiders winning Game 1, 4-1 and Bloomsburg winning Game 2, 10-2. The two team saw each other again last week in a PSAC Tournament elimination game in which the Raiders fell to the Huskies on a heartbreaking walk-off walk, 8-7.
It is the first meeting between the two teams in the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional Tournament since the 2013 NCAA Atlantic Region Championship that was held at Robb Field. The Raiders dropped a 6-0 decision in 2013 to the Huskies.

NCAA History

Shippensburg is 24-31 all-time in the NCAA Tournament and has won two NCAA Division II Regional Championships: 2003 and 2004. This is the 17th NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional appearance for the Raiders and the 18th postseason appearance overall (SU competed in the AIAW Division III in 1982). The Raiders best finish is third in the NCAA Division II Championship in 2004.
