Raiders women's swim team: Sixth place finish at Ithaca

SU took a sixth place at Ithaca’s 10th Annual Bomber Invitational over the weekend, with Lauren Croll and Marissa Bittner posting top 3 finishes.

A busy final day included five individual events and one relay for Shippensburg University’s women swimmers. The Raiders tallied nine individual performances that satisfied the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) qualifying standard.

How it happened

Sophomore Marissa Bittner (Middletown, Del./Appoquinimink) placed third in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:09.60 to pace the Raiders in the event. Sophomore Michaela Hersh (Mertztown, Pa./Brandywine Heights) was eighth in 2:11.43, and senior Madison Breiner (Glen Mills, Pa./Bayard Rustin) was 12th in 2:13. All three times were PSAC cuts.

Freshman Emily Newton (Summit Hill, Pa./Panther Valley) led the Raiders in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:36.05, while freshman Gracie Wetzel (Latrobe, Pa./Greater Latrobe) was right with her in 2:36.29.

Senior Tomomi Nakano (Hershey, Pa./Hershey) and sophomore Sammy Taylor (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) finished consecutively in the 100-yard freestyle with times of 55.40 seconds and 55.44 seconds.

Junior Marina Cote (Papillion, Neb./Daniel J. Gross) and freshman Gwen Elsey (Hermitage, Pa./Hickory) finished consecutively in the 1,650-yard freestyle, with Cote swimming 18:54.06 and Elsey touching the wall in 18:58.83.

The day also included the seldomly-contested 100-yard individual medley (IM), an event in which the Raiders usually only ever compete in Ithaca or occasionally at Navy. Several Raiders performed admirably, including freshman Lauren Croll (Honolulu, Hi./President Theodore Roosevelt) taking second in 1:01.35 and Wetzel fourth in 1:03.08.

Breiner, Croll, Nakano and Bittner swam the 400-yard freestyle relay in 3:39.80.

What’s next

Shippensburg will now break for final exams and the holidays and return to competition next month. SU’s next meet is Senior Day versus Edinboro on January 14 at Donald N. Miller Pool.
