Raiders sports: SU Women’s basketball trounces Clarion

The SU women’s basketball team trounced Clarion, 67-48 in a matchup Tuesday.

The Shippensburg University women’s basketball team established a double-digit halftime lead at Clarion Tuesday night in defeating the Golden Eagles 67-48 in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) mandated crossover at Waldo Tippin Gymnasium.

How it happened

Shippensburg (6-3, 2-1 PSAC) held Clarion (2-6, 1-2) to eight points in the first quarter and just five points in the second quarter to stake itself to a 27-13 halftime lead. It is the fewest points allowed by the Raiders in a first half since yielding just six points to East Stroudsburg on Jan. 21, 2012.

Senior Destiny Jefferson ( Scranton, Pa./West Scranton (West Chester)) led the Raiders with 21 points, marking her fifth game this season with 20 or more points this season. Her 13 first-half points equaled Clarion’s team point total at halftime. Jefferson made her first eight attempts at the free-throw line and finished the night 8-of-10. She also led the team with five assists and four steals.

Freshman Taja Colbert (Harrisburg, Pa./Bishop McDevitt) added a career-high 14 points on an efficient 6-of-7 shooting. It was her third double-digit scoring game of the season. She also added two rebounds and an assist.

Junior Lauren Pettis (Harrisburg, Pa./Susquehanna Township) was the third Raider in double figures, finishing with 11 points, and was a rebound shy of a double-double. Her nine rebounds were a team high. Pettis went 5-of-8 from the field and had three blocks.

Redshirt-junior guard Erin Gibbons (Swoyersville, Pa./Wyoming Valley West (Mansfield)) led the team in minutes Tuesday night and finished with seven points and three assists. Junior Aunbrielle Green (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin East) added eight points and five rebounds off the bench. Junior Lauren Mills (Lancaster, Pa./Lancaster Catholic) had eight rebounds.

Clarion was led by Cory Santoro with 16 points and Sierra Bermudez with 12 points.
