SU’s field hockey secured the No. 1 seed in the upcoming Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Tournament on Sunday with a 5-0 victory over the IUP Hawks.
How it happened
Shippensburg (14-0, 9-0 PSAC) got a hat trick from freshman Valu Paul (Buenos Aires, Argentina/Instituto La Salle Florida), a goal and two assists from senior Jenna Sluymer (Nieuw-Vennep, The Netherlands/Haarlemmermeer Lyceum, Hoofddorp), and a goal from senior Jazmin Petrantonio (Saenz Pena, Argentina/Colegio Nuestra Senora de la Misericordia).
SU scored twice in the second quarter, as Sluymer made a nifty individual move for the first tally. Paul later tipped in a Sluymer shot. SU took its 2-0 lead into halftime.
Paul scored again in the third quarter off a Sluymer assist. In the fourth quarter, Petrantonio converted a penalty stroke in the opening minute and Paul got her hat trick by rebounding home a Petrantonio shot.
Petrantonio tied her single-season career high her 29th goal of the season. Sluymer expanded her single-season career high with her 17th goal of the season. Paul matched her season goal total with her Sunday hat trick.
In goal, freshman Lindsay Tripodo (Gibbsboro, N.J./Eastern Regional) was credited with one save in recording her fifth solo shutout of the season. It’s the ninth shutout of the season overall for the Raiders.
Shots on goal were 16-1 in SU’s favor, and corners were 16-8 in SU’s favor.
Shippensburg only has one conference game remaining (Saturday vs. Slippery Rock) and the Raiders hold the tiebreaker over second-place East Stroudsburg (14-3, 8-1) by virtue of a Sept. 29 victory.
As a result, SU’S field hockey team will host the 2021 PSAC Field Hockey Championships (semifinals and finals) on Nov. 5-7 at Robb Sports Complex.
